Coating thickness ↔ mass calculator

Enter the coating thickness (µm) to get the mass per unit area (g/m²), or the other way round. The density is chosen by coating metal, or enter your own value. Everything runs in your browser.

Thickness– µm
Mass– g/m²

Mass (g/m²) = thickness (µm) × density (g/cm³) · Thickness (µm) = mass (g/m²) / density

The conversion assumes a dense, pore-free pure metal coating. In hot-dip galvanizing the coating contains iron-zinc alloy layers and the mass is usually given per surface; for alloy coatings (zinc-nickel, tin-lead) enter the mixture density, and for porous layers such as anodic oxide the value given by the producer.

For information only; the specification and the applicable coating standard govern. The final assessment rests with the responsible coating specialist.

Let the app record your coating thickness readingsThe Coating module records thickness readings, adhesion and appearance checks and prepares the PDF report.

Curious?

Why do some specifications ask for g/m²?In processes such as hot-dip galvanizing the thickness varies over the surface while the mass is measured precisely by weighing (before and after coating, or by stripping). That is why galvanizing specifications often speak in mass, while a magnetic thickness gauge gives a quick check on site.
What does "per surface" mean in galvanizing? Both faces of a sheet are coated; the mass is given per surface or as a total. Check which is meant in your specification; this tool calculates for one surface.
Which density for an alloy coating? The mixture density by mass fractions of the components, or the value given by the plating chemistry supplier. For zinc-nickel (12–15 % Ni) about 7.3–7.5 g/cm³ is commonly used; choose "My own value" and enter it.
How do I record thickness measurements?Measuring points, gauge, calibration and part/lot data are kept together. The Coating module of the app records thickness readings, assesses them against the specification limit and produces the PDF report.
