Feed rate calculator (turning, milling, drilling)

Choose the operation, enter RPM and feed; the table feed rate (vf) and, optionally, the cutting time for a given length appear instantly. If you do not know the RPM, it can be calculated from diameter and cutting speed. Everything runs in your browser; no data is sent.

Also available in: Türkçe · العربية

Feed rate vf (mm/min)–
Spindle speed used n (rev/min)–
Feed per revolution (mm/rev)–
Cutting time (min)–

Turning, drilling: vf = fn · n · Milling: vf = fz · z · n (feed per revolution fn = fz · z) · Time t = L / vf (net cutting time only) · From diameter and cutting speed: n = Vc · 1000 / (π · D) · Example: fz = 0.1 mm, z = 4, n = 3000 rev/min → vf = 1200 mm/min

The time covers only the cutting length; approach, retract, tool change and fixturing times are not included. In turning, the feed per revolution directly affects surface roughness: with the same nose radius, a higher feed leaves deeper marks. Take the starting feed from the tool manufacturer's catalogue.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between feed per tooth and feed per revolution? In turning and drilling the tool advances fn per revolution. In milling each tooth cuts its own chip; fz is the chip per tooth. The cutter advances fz · z per revolution.
What is the effective number of teeth? The number of teeth that cut in one revolution; for most cutters it equals the total number of teeth. For some cutter and insert layouts the catalogue gives the effective number separately.
Why is drilling feed entered as fn?The drill advances fn per revolution; with a two-flute drill each lip takes fn/2. Catalogue values are usually given in mm/rev.
How does feed affect surface roughness? In turning the mark spacing equals the feed per revolution and the mark depth grows with the square of the feed. If the roughness requirement is not met, review feed and nose radius together first.
